English diary – 2024/12/18

I attended an English class on Monday evening. The teacher asked us to discuss a topic about a young American man who shot a healthcare company’s CEO in New York.

In my opinion, I think this young man is not wise. His actions involve two major issues. First, he is a data engineer with the potential to earn a lot of money in the future, but he killed the CEO of a healthcare company, which only ruined his own life. Second, even though the healthcare company refused many people’s insurance claims, causing significant losses, his actions did not change this fact and only sacrificed himself.

Then, the teacher asked us to compare the healthcare policies between Taiwan and the United States. My classmates shared their opinions on this matter. Personally, I believe that Taiwan’s government-subsidized healthcare system is beneficial to society. Disadvantaged or economically struggling people might not have enough money to pay for private health insurance. In the United States, many people cannot afford health insurance fees, but in Taiwan, the government subsidizes health insurance fees for underprivileged groups. Although some people might misuse the healthcare system to see a doctor even when they don’t really need medical services, it is still a good system overall.
