When I was a student, I once tried playing Resident Evil 5 and Operation Raccoon City out of curiosity. At that time, I couldn’t handle horror games—I was constantly terrified by zombies, especially the ones that suddenly rushed at me.
Years later, now working full-time, I stumbled upon the Resident Evil remake series on the Mac App Store one weekend when my left foot was injured. Driven by curiosity, I decided to give the games another shot. I thought that if they still scared me as much as before, I would simply stop playing. To my surprise, after years of being hardened by real-life experiences, the zombies in the game no longer seemed that terrifying.
I started with Resident Evil 2. In the beginning, the sudden zombie attacks still startled me, but I gradually got used to it. I began solving puzzles in the game—well, mostly wandering in circles and getting stuck. When I couldn’t bear it anymore, I turned to online walkthroughs. Eventually, things started to go more smoothly (well, not really—I was still stuck, just got better at reading guides).
After finally finishing Resident Evil 2, where Leon escapes with Claire and Sherry Birkin by train, I became curious about the other titles in the series. Luckily, the App Store was having a sale, so I bought Resident Evil 3 and 4 just for fun (okay, mainly because I couldn’t resist a bargain). I somehow managed to finish both over the course of two weekends.
I can sum up my thoughts on Resident Evil 3 in one sentence: “Jill’s Tyrant Survival Showdown.” Jill took on all the responsibility of helping uninfected civilians escape from Raccoon City. In the remake, she looked even more badass. Compared to the male lead Carlos, she seemed utterly exhausted. But that’s fine—modern women should be stronger than men anyway.
Next, I moved on to Resident Evil 4. I started with Ada’s side story before playing Leon’s main campaign. Ada had a grappling gun, which made it super easy to traverse dangerous areas—just aim, shoot, and swing across. It made the gameplay smooth and enjoyable. Although Ada’s mission was mainly about retrieving an item for Wesker, she still managed to flirt with Leon or provide him with firepower support (like a surprise rocket launcher) when he was in trouble.
After finishing Ada’s storyline, I initially thought about skipping Leon’s campaign. But since I still couldn’t go to the gym due to my injury, I kept playing. Leon’s story was much richer and was clearly the main storyline. There were more zombies and bosses, making it more challenging—especially since Leon didn’t have a grappling gun to fly around with. It really tested my skills. Thankfully, after training with Ada, I had mastered the rifle. Once I saved enough money in-game, I upgraded it to the max. Although I still occasionally got hit while dodging bosses or surprise attacks, the overall experience was both enjoyable and rewarding.
The main mission of Leon’s story was to rescue the president’s daughter, Ashley. As the game progressed, I noticed a growing chemistry between them—classic hero-rescues-damsel trope. Toward the end, Ashley even asked Leon if he’d protect her after the mission. Sadly, Leon, being the ultimate straight man, completely missed the hint. I seriously wanted to punch him. Could it be that the one in his heart is actually Ada?
Even though Ashley clearly expressed her feelings, I believe Leon and Ada would never end up together. Ada is a woman who knows exactly what she wants. Even if there’s tension between her and Leon, she’ll always do what she believes in. She’s truly a role model for modern independent women.

To wrap things up, I’ve included a few snapshots of the ambiguous moments between Ashley and Leon in the game.

I saved the game so many times—I thought I’d end up getting a C!
