The most vivid memory I have of AMD dates back to my college days. When I was about to start university, my mom and I went to a nearby computer store. She told the store owner that I was going to study computer science. Hearing this, the owner said, “Alright, if it were for a liberal arts major, an average computer would suffice, but for a computer-related major, you’ll need something better.”
He then began selecting components like the CPU and RAM to build a custom PC. Once it was assembled, I excitedly brought the computer to my dorm room, marking the start of my days of booting up the machine to play games every day.
I’ll never forget the AMD sticker on the case of my computer. It was powered by an AMD Athlon 64 CPU. My impression of AMD has always been that it offered great value for money. Although it wasn’t as powerful as the Intel Core 2 Duo of that time, it handled my gaming needs, like playing custom maps in *Warcraft*, with ease.
The only times it struggled were when I played map games where the screen was almost entirely filled with units, practically overcrowding the map. At that point, there was a high chance of encountering a “memory insufficient” warning, forcing me to shut down my computer in the middle of the night in the dorm and reluctantly go to bed.
After working for a year and starting iOS app development, I switched entirely to using Macs. From Intel CPUs to Apple chips, AMD has since disappeared from my tech usage. Still, I’m deeply grateful to AMD for being part of my youth, accompanying me through countless college nights.
